Sheffield Predators will become Sheffield Giants in 2017

SHEFFIELD, SOUTH YORKSHIRE, UK – The Sheffield Predators American Football Club will change its name to Sheffield Giants from the 2017 season.

The new name was chosen by the club after over 2,000 people participated in a public vote last month.

After it received over 180 different suggestions for a new name from the public, the club made a final shortlist from which ‘Giants’ emerged a clear winner.

Preparations are underway to design a new logo and colour scheme for the club’s 2017 kit, which will be worn by all teams including Youth, Adult Contact and Flag.

The club is planning to stage a kit launch event in the city to reveal its new look for the Sheffield Giants before Christmas 2016.

“We are delighted with the final choice” said General Manager Toby Chesters. “It was a highly democratic process, aided by some terrific coverage in the media and a swell of enthusiasm for the task from both the public and also our players, many of whom were highly active on social media encouraging people to make their suggestions.

“Giants will be our new name for the 2017 football season and beyond, and we are all looking forward to building an allegiance to the new brand.

“But first, we are determined to give the Predators name a good send-off in the current season, and all of our teams will be putting body and soul into winning as many of their remaining 2016 fixtures as possible under the current name”.

The Sheffield Predators American Football Club decided to change its name after recent prosecutions in South Yorkshire, widely reported in the media and entirely unconnected with the club, created negative associations with its chosen identity.

“We had become uncomfortable with the name Predators, and felt that we needed a new identity to help us achieve our aims to attract new players from schools, colleges and universities in the area” said Chesters.

“As the Giants, we look forward to recruiting many more players who can come and join us for the 2017 season. American Football is physical, athletic, and incredibly exciting to play, for both sexes, and we aim to keep the Sheffield Giants at the forefront of the sport nationwide.”

The Club is among the UK’s top dozen American Football teams. It competes in the BAFANL Northern Premier Division at Adult Contact level. It also has well-developed Flag (non-contact) and Youth teams, with members as young as 14 years old playing contact football. The Club’s Flag team has recently achieved national success, finishing 2nd and 3rd in the National Championships in the last two years.

Chesters is also hoping that the new brand will attract commercial interest. “The new-look 2017 Sheffield Giants represent a great opportunity for organisations to get involved with a community-minded sporting organisation in the UK’s fifth-largest city” he said.

The Club plans to build a new website and social media presence in autumn 2016 ready for its 2017 campaign.

The name Giants has links one of the city’s historic sports teams. In the 1980s, Sheffield’s first American Football team was named Steel City Giants. The team had some success during the sport’s Budweiser League era, winning a Championship in 1988, and several players and coaches from the old team are still involved in the sport in the UK to this day.

“We hope that the people of Sheffield will embrace the Giants of American Football just as they have done with the city’s two Football League teams – United and Wednesday – as well as with the Steelers in ice hockey, the Sharks in basketball, the Tigers in speedway and the Eagles in rugby league” said Chesters.

“We urge anyone who wants to try American Football for themselves to contact us straight away – we always welcome newcomers to this tremendously rewarding sport”.

Ends.

As of summer 2016 the Club is seeking to better its investment into the future of the sport at grass-roots level with a re-brand, which will help to continue the great work already started in local schools, introducing the sport of American football to a wider community. The Club has particularly supported the growth of local women’s sport, providing coaching to the Hallam Women's Flag team and helping them to achieve 3rd place in the National Championships in only their second year of existence.
