Sheffield Predators will change name to avoid “negative associations”

  • Suggestions should be emailed to wearesheffield@mail.com
  • Deadline for suggestions: 5pm on Wednesday 18th May 2016

SHEFFIELD, SOUTH YORKSHIRE, UK – The Sheffield Predators American Football Club today announces that it will be instigating a total re-brand of the club in 2016.

The re-brand will involve changes to the Club’s name, logo and club colours, and will apply to all levels of football including Youth, Adult Contact and Flag.

“The name ‘Predators’ no longer sits comfortably with the Club’s stated aims of developing links with the local community, including its schools, colleges and universities” said the Club’s General Manager Toby Chesters.

“We need to avoid any negative associations which the current name, unfortunately, is attracting. Our new name, when chosen, will help us to develop the Club progressively in the future, both in South Yorkshire and beyond.”

The Club will immediately engage in a period of public consultation, inviting suggestions as to the Club’s new name. These can now be emailed to wearesheffield@mail.com.

Post-consultation, the Club will create a public poll of the most popular suggestions, giving the public the opportunity to vote for their favourite. The leading entries will then be presented for vote to the Club’s membership.

The Club, among the UK’s top dozen American football teams, competes in the BAFANL Northern Premier Division at Adult Contact level. It also has well-developed Flag (non-contact) and Youth teams, with members as young as 14 years old playing contact football.

The Club’s Flag team has recently achieved national success, finishing 2nd and 3rd in the National Championships in the last two years.

“In its relatively short history this Club already has a proud track record of producing international-standard athletes in the sport” said Chesters. “Our Men’s teams have produced footballers who have recently represented Team GB at both European and World Championship level, and our Women’s teams are progressing just as quickly with at least one Team GB player already.”

On the subject of the name-change, Chesters added: “The costs incurred in re-branding will be significant, and we will be seeking support from organisations who empathise with our reasons for changing, and who also appreciate the opportunity to work with a community-minded sporting organisation in the UK’s fifth-largest city.

“We hope that the suggestions we receive for our new name will celebrate links to the city and community, and that they will reflect the key, iconic ingredients of what it is to live by the slogan #WeAreSheffield.

“Most of all we urge everyone to get involved, and help us choose a great new name!”

The Club expects all aspects of its new identity to be in place by the end of the year.

Ends.

It also draws from the two University American football teams within the city – the Hallam Warriors and Sheffield Sabres.

Run by volunteers with a proven track record of achievement in their chosen industry or field, the Club is a professionally-run entity with the infrastructure in place to allow for inclusivity and to meet performance expectations.

Since inception in 2008 the Club has generated a number of international-standard players at every level. Some have gone on to represent Team GB in both European and World Championships across Adult Contact, Flag, Student, Women and Youth levels.

As of summer 2016 the Club is seeking to better its investment into the future of the sport at grass-roots level with a re-brand, which will help to continue the great work already started in local schools, introducing the sport of American football to a wider community. The Club has particularly supported the growth of local women’s sport, providing coaching to the Hallam Women's Flag team and helping them to achieve 3rd place in the National Championships in only their second year of existence.
