GOLFERS FULFIL FOOTBALL DREAMS AT PLAYGOLF MANCHESTER

Football-loving golfers in Manchester can now fulfil a sporting dream – to score against either Manchester United or Manchester City – after one of the UK’s busiest golf centres installed a pair of goals on its driving range.

And in the first five days, over three thousand golfers have stuck one in the back of the net.

The latest innovation at Playgolf Manchester (www.manchestergolf.co.uk), one of the region’s best-known sporting landmarks, is a pair of goalposts approximately 100 yards down-range from the golf centre’s distinctive two-tier building near The Trafford Centre.

The left-hand goal sports the Manchester United club crest, while the right-hand goal is in Manchester City colours.

United fans, unsurprisingly, are already lining up to take pot-shots at the ‘City’ goal, and vice-versa. And following Sunday’s titanic clash at Old Trafford, interest in football across the city has never been higher.

“We’re a city united by football,” said Playgolf general manager Craig Whitfield, who had the original idea. “So we thought we’d give people a chance to show their support when they come to practice their golf at Playgolf Manchester.

“We managed to get the new goals installed before this weekend’s derby game, thankfully, and they show every sign of being a massive hit with our customers.”

Pete Styles, a PGA coach at the Playgolf Academy there, said: “This weekend’s Sunday morning junior class became a hard-fought battle among twelve kids, all hitting balls at the new goals.

“We had a little competition at the end of the group lesson and, believe it or not, the Man United kids won four-three with the very last ball of the day. I wish I’d taken the hint and had a bet on the big match!”

Craig Whitfield concluded: “So far the ‘red half’ of Manchester has outnumbered the ‘blues’ on the range by 60-40. So let’s have you City fans, come and do a Bellamy and bag some goals against United!

“But with several genuine Manchester United first-teamers currently using our golf school, don’t be surprised if you’re up against a real-life sharp-shooter in the next driving range bay!”
