| VOLUNTEERS REAP THE REWARDS AT ST MELLION INTERNATIONAL RESORT Two members from St Mellion International Resort scooped the top prizes in a golf day for all local golfers who helped in the staging of last year’s Midas English Seniors Open, held on the prestigious Nicklaus Signature Course at the venue. More than 130 players competed in the special Volunteer Event, which was organised during August by the resort’s owners, Crown Golf, to thank volunteers for their efforts in making the tournament such a success. Rod Ellis won the men’s event with 35 points, while his St Mellion colleague Glennis Wootton lifted the ladies title with 33 points. Volunteers from numerous golf clubs within the region helped at the Midas English Seniors Open last year in a variety of roles – including scoring and marshalling. Now St Mellion International Resort is calling on local golfers to volunteer their services for The English Open, a famed European Tour event featuring some of Europe’s best golfers, which takes place in August next year. David Moon, Golf Operations Manager at St Mellion International Resort, said: “This a fantastic golf day which we hold simply to say ‘thank you’ to all those people who helped us run the event. “Volunteers play such a vital role in the success of important tournaments and we hope many more local golfers join us by volunteering their services for The English Open next August 13-16.” After the recent golf day, Ben Watson, Championship Director with The European Tour, and David Moon gave a presentation which highlighted the scale of The English Open and how important it was for the West Country to be staging the event. St Mellion International Resort is currently undergoing a £100m redevelopment in readiness for The English Open, which will bring some of the biggest names in European golf to the West Country. The project will signal the venue's transition from one of the first established golf resorts in England to its new position as a stylish, modern resort with great golfing heritage. |
