MELLION INTERNATIONAL RESORT HOSTS Crown Golf, the UK’s largest golf course owner/operator, is delighted to be hosting The English Open golf tournament at its prestigious St Mellion International Resort, Cornwall, from August 13 to 16 2009. The event is returning to The European Tour International Schedule after an absence of seven years and will be played at St Mellion International Resort until 2013. Today (September 2, 2008) a dramatic new logo for the event was unveiled, featuring the iconic red and white English flag to emphasise the rich history and tradition of the tournament – which was first played in 1979. Stephen Lewis, CEO of Crown Golf, said today: “The staging of The English Open at St Mellion International Resort will be a proud day. “ Everyone connected with our organisation is looking forward to supporting The European Tour in delivering a fantastic event for some of the world’s best golfers and raising the profile of Cornwall as a place to visit and play golf. “ The English Open will have a tremendous positive economic impact in the region, creating jobs and attracting thousands of spectators who, in turn, will generate significant tourism expenditure.” Hosting high visibility professional tournament golf is a key ingredient in the £100m redevelopment plans currently underway at St Mellion International Resort. Crown Golf is constructing a brand new, 80-room landmark hotel which will provide outstanding accommodation at the event and the superb Nicklaus Signature Course – the first one built in the UK by the legendary golfer in 1988 – is undergoing a £2.5m improvement programme. A new website www.englishopenatstmellion.co.uk has been launched to provide spectators and sponsors with up-to-date information about The English Open. |
